I needed a special baby quilt and I couldn’t find a pattern to fit the bill so I improvised and made my own. I combined two quilts I liked to make one that I loved.
I saw this quilt with instructions on Modern Quilt Relish. You can see the post and instructions here. I used these instructions as my base since I had never designed a quilt pattern before.
I would have made this quilt as is except the requested colors for the quilt were gray and pink and I didn’t think it would have the same depth. I like gray and pink together and it is a very popular combination but try and find a bundle of fabric with just pink and gray. I searched for days and couldn’t find one. I was running out of time and I finally gave up and went to JoAnn’s. All the fabric was 50% off plus an extra 10% off and I got everything I needed for around $15.00. Wow.
I got 2 yards of each of the pink and gray polka dot and 1 yard of the cute elephant print. I used all my fabric too so I would go with my measurements and not those from Modern Quilt Relish. In their defense, I did mess up on my binding and had to cut some extra strips but still not 1/2 yard extra. Better extra than not enough. Right?
Again, the pattern was talking depth and I feared the colors I had wouldn’t provide that. I have been in love with this String of Pearls quilt from Christa Quilts for ages. I love how the focus fabric is highlighted by the frame. I couldn’t find any instructions on how to do this so I figured it out on my own.
If you want to make this baby quilt. You need 5 yards of fabric and some batting. That is enough fabric for the front, back and binding.
In a day or so, I’ll post the instructions for making the top.
